The Biggest Challenges for WASH in Cambodia

1. Open defecation: Open defecation is the practice of defecating in the open, rather than using a toilet. It is a major health hazard, contaminating water sources and spreading diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, and typhoid. In Cambodia, 80% of the poorest rural Cambodians defecate in the open.

2. Unsafe drinking water: Unsafe drinking water is water that is contaminated with bacteria, viruses, or parasites. It can cause a variety of health problems, including diarrhea, cholera, and typhoid. In Cambodia, 1 in 3 Cambodians uses water from a non-improved drinking source, which means it may be contaminated.

3. Lack of WASH facilities in schools and healthcare: WASH facilities include toilets, handwashing stations, and water storage. They are essential for maintaining good hygiene and preventing the spread of disease. In Cambodia, 7 in 10 pre-primary schools and 1 in 2 rural healthcare facilities do not have adequate WASH facilities.

4. Lack of awareness: Many Cambodians, especially in rural areas, do not have enough knowledge about the importance of WASH practices, such as handwashing and using toilets.

These challenges have a significant impact on the health and well-being of the Cambodian people. They can lead to diarrhea, cholera, typhoid, and other waterborne diseases, which can be deadly, especially for young children. They can also contribute to stunting, which is a condition in which children do not reach their full growth potential.

There are a number of things that can be done to address these challenges. The government of Cambodia has made WASH a priority and is working to improve access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities. NGOs and other organizations are also working to raise awareness about WASH's importance and provide training and support to communities.

With continued effort, it is possible to overcome these challenges and improve the health and well-being of the Cambodian people.

Here are some ways you can help:

  • Learn more about the challenges of WASH in Cambodia. There are many resources available online and in libraries.

  • Support organizations that are working to improve access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene. There are many organizations working in Cambodia, both local and international.

  • Talk to your friends and family about the importance of WASH practices. The more people who know about WASH, the more likely we are to make a difference.

Together, we can make a difference!
