**** Youth Leadership in WASH Action by Center for Sustainable Water **

Cambodia is facing a major challenge in meeting its Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 of ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030.

One of the key challenges is the lack of qualified water professionals. According to a 2016 report by the Ministry of Rural Development, Cambodia needs an additional 12,000 water-related professionals by 2030. However, there are currently only about 750 people working in this sector in NGOs and government combined.

This shortage of qualified professionals is due to a number of factors, including a mismatch between education and skills demand in the labor market, and a lack of opportunities for young people to gain experience in the water sector.

To address this challenge, a new program is training young people in sustainable water management, with a focus on leadership and real-life experience. The program is designed to help young people pursue viable pathways to employment in the WASH/WRM (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene / Water Resources Management) sector.

The program is already having a positive impact, with participants reporting that they have gained new skills and knowledge, and have developed their leadership skills. The program is also helping to build a more inclusive WASH/WRM sector, by ensuring that women, people with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups are included.

The program is almost complete, and the final lesson-learned forum will be held on July 27, 2023. The forum will provide an opportunity to share the learnings from the program and to discuss how to scale up the program to reach more young people.

This program is a valuable step towards ensuring that Cambodia has the qualified water professionals it needs to meet its SDG 6 targets. It is also a great example of how young people can be a force for positive change in their communities.

We are excited to see the impact that this program will have on the future of sustainable water management in Cambodia!
